João Pedro Costa was born on the 11th of November, 1989, in Gaia. He started his first music lessons at the age of nine with a neighbor. A few months later he auditioned at the Conservatório de Música do Porto, playing Bach, Beethoven and a piano piece of his own composition where he took first place.

He attended the Conservatoire, for 8 years. During this time he studied piano with Rosgard Lingardsson and participated in masterclasses with José Parra and Serguei Covalen. He was also part of the Conservatoire Choir directed and taught by the mezzo-soprano Magna Ferreira.

He participated several times in the Conservatoire’s Piano Competition. He won the 2001 competition and in 2003 was awarded the 1st Prize and the Prize for the Best Interpretation of a Piece written by a Portuguese composer.
In 2005, he started Analysis and Techniques of Composition studies with João-Heitor Rigaud. He was awarded the 2nd Prize at the Marília Rocha Piano Competition (2005).
In April 2006, he gave a solo debut at Casa-Museu Teixeira Lopes, in Vila Nova de Gaia, and he has been playing at Casa da Música, in Porto, on behalf of the Conservatoire since then. He also played at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos, in Aveiro and at the Faculdade de Belas-Artes do Porto in 2007.

After finishing 12th year of the Sciences and Technologies Secondary School Course and the 7th Grade of Piano studies with the maximum score, at the Conservatoire he started dedicating himself to music in full time.
In September 2007 he joined the foundation of the Associação Primeiro Ensaio, an association with cultural aims, without profit purposes, intended for the development and promotion of music for young people. He worked and accompaned Children Choirs under the direction of Magna Ferreira, President of the association.
He finished the studies at Conservatório de Música do Porto in July 2008 with the highest classifications. He has been the vice-president of Associação Primeiro Ensaio since 2008.

In August 2008, he made contact with outstanding piano students and pianists from all over the world by participating in the Chetham’s International Festival & Summer School for Pianists at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester. There, he attended masterclasses given by Murray McLachlan, Philippe Cassard and Anton Kuerti.

Joao Pedro Costa continues his musical studies started in September 2008 at the Royal Northern College of Music, with Murray McLachlan – Head of Keyboard at Chetham´s School of Music and tutor at the RNCM in Manchester, as well as Artistic Director of the Chetham’s International Summer School & Festival for Pianists and Chair of the EPTA-UK.
